Kenwood Wins South Suburban Fall League

The Little Things that Win Games

6:53 Great Split by Korey when he recognizes that Squirt's man hedges to high.

7:53 The three by Antoine was good, but what made it possible was Kyle's read as the screener. Antoine's man tries to go underneath the screen, Kyle reacts accordingly, and rolls right into him, completely taking him out of the play, and leaving Antoine with an easy shot.

9:53 We practiced three different types of passes over the summer off the side pick and roll. Antoine uses the inside hand bounce pass to perfection. Kyle does a great job reading Antoine's man. Seeing that Antoine's man goes over the top, Kyle sprints to the basket instead of rolling. He just has to finish next time.

21:54 Antoine uses a distance dribble and then turns the corner, taking advantage of the bad switch.

24:54 Squirt recognizes the switch, rolls and seals the defender. Korey delivers a nice pass.

26:01 Korey defends the out of bounds play exactly how we want to, not guarding the ball, putting his head under the rim, and protecting against lay-ups.

32:54 Good push by Mario, great read by Sam on the Pick and Sprint, Mario delivers the ball perfectly.

New Uniforms for the Broncos!!!!

Thanks to the incredibly generous donation of Mary Jo George and Family, the Kenwood Broncos will be dressed for success. As a basketball program, we can not even begin to express how thankful we are for her generosity. We will show our appreciation by doing things the right way, both on and off the court.

Fall League at Rita

The Kenwood Boys Basketball Team will be participating in a Sunday league hosted by St. Rita. League play will start this Sunday at 1 for the Broncos. If you'd like to catch an early glimpse of this year's team, head over to 7740 S. Western Ave. Players who will be participating in the event will be Co-Captains Mario Sawyer and Sam Wu, sharp-shooting senior guards Chris Pride and Antoine Williams, big men Toshaun Polk and Kyle Begusa, and "the human fast break" Remy Price. Korey Williams will run the show for the Broncos and two-sport star Trent Wigley will do all the little things to help his team win. Jeff Jones will look to be the X-factor and defensive stopper that the Broncos will need to make a run in the state tournament come March. Don't miss your opportunity because tickets may be hard to come by at The Wood when the regular season starts.

The Spread Offense

The Spread Offense is extremely hard to guard if the side ball screen is executed properly with both the screener and the ball handler making the correct reads based on how the defense reacts. This type of offense will allow us to spread the floor and have two-man action on one side of the court. It will allow our guards to create and get to the basket and give our posts easy opportunities at the rim. As a team that will like to run, we can flow right into this off of our break. The thing that I like most about it is that it will give us structure that we need, yet still allow us to be creative.

Major Points of Emphasis

1. Rules for the Screener
- Defender over top of screen = PICK AND SPRINT
- Defender underneath = PICK AND ROLL
- Switch on Screen = PICK AND ROLL
- Early Hedge by Defense = SLIP
- Ball Handler Refuses Screen = POP BACK FOR SHOT

2. Duties of Ball Handler
- Catch Ball Free Throw Line Extended
- Wait for Screener to be set before move is made
- Rub right off the screener's hip
- Ball Handler foot (along with shoulders and head) must beat defenders around screen

3. Action off the Screen
- Corner Dribble: Ball Handler turns the corner and attacks the rim (Screener Pops Corner)
- Distance Dribble: Ball Handler creates distance from the screen for jumper or hits roll man
- Distance to Corner: Ball Handler creates distance and then turns corner as hedge recovers
- Refuse the Screen: Defender tries to cheat, ball handler goes opposite way of screen

4 Types of Passes
- One hand off the dribble
- Backhand with inside hand
- Air Pass over the top

The basic offense can be seen on the right side of this page. More to come later as we continue our step-by-step progression....

Check out Deron Williams Explain how he uses the side pick and roll to create for himself and to create for the roller.

JUNE 2011 SUMMER SCHEDULE

Attention Bronco Players:

Throughout the course of the summer, we will have 25 days where I can have direct coaching contact with all of you. During this time, we will have practices which focus on individual improvement and skill development.

Program-wide, we are going to make a push to convert to a ball screening offense versus both man and zone. I will post these sets on this site as well as different video clips that I believe would be beneficial to all of you.

Kenwood Athletic Department Fundraising

Kenwood Academy is located on the South Side of Chicago at 51st and Blackstone. We have a one word mission at our school that applies not only to our academic departments, but also our athletic department......"College." While many of our students are headed in that direction, others need a little extra incentive. Our athletic department can be used as means to end if we have the proper funding. In my case, I realized early on in my teaching and coaching career how important basketball was to many of these kids. By holding our athletes accountable for their grades and behavior, myself and others, have seen a positive effect on our players grades and our overall school climate. We have chosen to stick to are academic standards and behavioral expectations, regardless of what it may do to our winning percentage and have seen enormous improvement in our kids throughout the year. We believe all of us can do even better if we were to have the proper funding.

Speaking on behalf of the basketball program, we currently are short on equipment, specifically, basketballs and uniforms. The bleachers in our gymnasium are the same ones that were there when the school was built in the early sixties. We have one semi-working scoreboard and only receive transportation funds for conference games. As a result, we were not able to schedule many games outside of CPS conference play.

Since we have learned the importance of using basketball and other sports as motivation, we recognize the need to make the department more attractive. By improving our resources and facilities, we know that we can make the carrot that we dangle in front of our kids far more meaningful, and thus we will see better results in the areas of academic performance and personal discipline.

If you would like to become a BRONCO supporter, you can donate by clicking on the Donate button at the top right hand corner of your screen. Payment can be made safely using your paypal account or by credit card. It is easy to do, and trust me, your support will make a difference. Anything that you can give, regardless of how much, has the power to change lives!
